Zambia Trip Fall '08
We are planning another mission trip to Zambia this fall. Our goals for the trip include caring for the children in the Village of Hope, serving at the Chikumbuso school and HIV/AIDS widow training facility, and using specific skills and knowledge to add to the overall function and growth of the All Kids Can Learn (AKCL) village. If you are interested in going on this trip and have the ability to provide or raise your own funding, please pray about being part of this team.
Zambia Presentation
On Sunday evening, March 9th, over 250 people from EHCC gathered to eat pizza, see the images, and hear the stores from our pastors’ trip to Zambia. Kendal shared a slide show that followed the activities of each day throughout the two week trip. Josh took a few moments to express some of his thoughts about the needs in Zambia and how God has positioned our church at this moment. Mark discussed the hope within the Zambian people and the future vision for our work there. Pastor Shawn shared some of his experiences and what he sees as the next steps we need to take as a church. Here is a summary of his thoughts.
- Pray as you bring your change to help us buy a block machine for the village. The block machine costs $20,000 and we have collected almost $8,000.
- Pray for the orphan village. They are starting a school and need supplies, curriculum, and wisdom.
- Pray for Chikumbuso. The school needs a new well, a place for students to stay overnight, and another classroom building.
- Pray as we begin to put together a team for another trip to Zambia in fall '08.
- Pray for guidance as we explore the many opportunities for future involvement.
- The evening ended with the entire team engaging in a question and answer session.
Zambia Lead Trip
Shawn, Kendal, Josh, and Mark spent two weeks in Zambia and arrived back in Denver on Tuesday, February 12th. They returned with a deeper understanding of the needs and opportunities that are present in Zambia.
The Village of Hope model for orphan ministry is an exciting and practical way to raise, educate, and spiritually disciple HIV/AIDS orphans. This happens in the context of a village compound that is constructed with the aim of teaching self-sufficiency and providing meaningful work for people. It is the brain-child of Benedict and Kathleen Schwartz, an American couple who moved there to build the village. There are many opportunities in the village to use a wide range of skills.
Urban ministry opportunities are also being considered. The inner city slums of Lusaka, Zambia are called compounds. They are densely populated, dangerous, and filled with needy people. The team spent a few days with Pastor Emmanuel Lasumpa who recently moved his church from downtown Lusaka to a location on the edge of a compound. They visited a Christian school called Chikumbuso that was started three years ago by an American woman named Linda Wilkerson on the site of a former bar and brothel. Each day 300 children and about 80 HIV/AIDS widows are educated, fed, and loved by the teachers, leaders, and church members from the community. Visit the Chikumbuso website: www.chikumbuso.com.

Geography
Zambia, a landlocked country in south-central Africa, is about one-tenth larger than Texas. It is surrounded by Angola, Zaire, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. The country is mostly a plateau that rises to 8,000 ft (2,434 m) in the east.
